Challenge: no. 4: Save energy
Problem: How many times have you switched on an appliance in a room and forgot about it, or kept your laptop on charge overnight? In a study, around 40% of electricity consumption in a household is due to light/bulb and 27% is totally unnecessary. When extended to other appliances, around $700 and 5000Kg CO2 can be saved annually. A recent survey of 6,000 small and medium-sized businesses in Europe installed with smart meters found that 46% of their energy use was outside normal business hours.
Solution: Our application gamifies energy saving and gives user custom recommendations to switch to more energy efficient appliances. Using smart occupancy sensors, Node MSU and relays, in less than €15 we detect if any appliance is running unnecessarily and send user notification to turn them off. Users get redeemable points for being energy efficient. With features like snooze notification, auto turnoff and leaderboard to compete against friends we provide a seamless energy saving experience.
Impact: An average modern household uses 12000kwh energy annually which amounts to approx $1800. If unnecessary appliances are turned off, around $686 and 5000KG of CO2 can be saved annually per household. If implemented in a locality, it saves on an average, 0.25 Million Kg of CO2, 500 Million Kg of CO2 in a city and 5.58 Billion Kg of CO2 in Prague Metropolitan area. We motivate users to amend his behavior towards energy saving by showing him the direct environmental impact of his energy saving.
Feasibility: The overall setup cost is around €14 per room (upto 5 appliances) with respect to €650 in annual saving. We will be generating revenue through in store sales and third party product listings. We also have the option of hyperlocal advertising and partnership with the government for incentives to households shifting to energy efficient approaches. We will market the product through referral programs and local partnerships.
What you built: 1. Designed simple, interactive and intuitive user interface to enhance user engagement. 2. Designed algorithm for point system, monetary value of energy saved through our app and leader-board. 3. Tested Proof of concept with mentors and other participants and incorporated feedback. 4. Came up with a feasible business model and marketing strategy. 5. Narrowed down hardware specification and reduced installation cost.
What you had before: We were working on IoT devices, ubiquitous computing and predictive analysis. We had the relays and Node MCUs before the hackathon which we incorporated in our solution.
What comes next: We will be working on the MVP along with onboarding local partners for beta testing. After beta testing, we will be launching our app with an offering of an instore in collaboration with 3rd party sellers for fulfillment and hyperlocal advertising to expand revenue streams. We plan to collect energy usage data to run predictive analysis and reduce energy consumption by automatically managing appliance usage. We wish to gamify energy saving and incorporate energy saving habits.
