Challenge: no. 2: Sustainable gift packaging
Problem: Unsustainable gift packaging for bottles or cans of beer.
Solution: 2 ways: First is durable foldable box made of light wooden bottom and two sides connected by hinges and a sturdy, washable textile. On the top sits a wooden lid with a holder, that connects it with the rest of the box. Cooling box is made of material which looks like polystyrene, but it's grown from mushroom and agricultural waste. This material has typical polystyren characteristics, but flame resistant and fully biodegradable. The mushroom box can be used multiple times or being composted.
Impact: Accessible premium and exclusive gift packaging, which allows seasonal or any special design placement. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Lg10mgIeDVTc3ieNjGSnqsNDbx64amKG/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Bb9IeSsUcfqAt2Yq_i_TgEm75BYK261T/view?usp=sharing
Feasibility: Both solutions need new production infrastructure, but the technology and methodology of production already exists. Making the wooden box is simple process. The production costs are estimated to be low. Growing this mushroom polystyrene takes almost a month. Mixture of mushroom and agricultural waste is put into prepared form, where it grows for three weeks. Then its dried and ready for protective purpose. Estimated price is for 50-150 CZK it depends on the difficulty of design.
What you built: We made two mock ups of new products. Detailed design for collapsible box - as seen in video. Funny design for biodegradable and multiple usage suitable new product. Our proposal is with well known family game - snakes and ladders, or Ludo. It needs to have just a few figures and a dice in the package.
What you had before: We researched through various companies, which work already with this biodegradable fungi and agricultural waste material. We searched for specific materials made from fungi and have found a biotechnological start-up developing it here in Czechia which inspired us. We also contacted this company for further information.
What comes next: Our main motivation is to make mass production more environmentally friendly and spread awareness in new biodegradable materials.
