Challenge: no. 2: Bottle deposit scheme
Problem: The main problem of the second challenge is that the bottles that have been physically damaged can no longer be accepted by the deposit system. Therefore, lots of containers for liquids aren't collected and people choose to get rid of them by simply throwing them out to the landfills, where those will stay undecomposed for ages.
Solution: We propose a simple yet effective idea to solve this issue. Currently the barcodes are displayed on the side of the bottle, consequently if the bottle is damaged it will not be accepted. But if the barcode was transferred on top of the cap (that can hardly be damaged) the problem of system refusing to take in crumpled bottles would be minimized. This solution would allow the beverage packaging to be identified in all conditions.
Impact: Our solution would positively change the recycling industry since more packaging would be converted into new bottles. Therefore, the demand for virgin plastic production would decrease.
Feasibility: Implementing this new barcoding system would generally cost under $1000 to fully setup and install, however giving financial arrangement of barcoding system for plastic bottles is quite hard and can be differentiated by product companies. Consequently, we have determined only the budget amount for barcoding system installation.
What you built: We came up with a business idea, not with a product.
What you had before: We came up with the idea during the hackathon, so before it we didn't have anything.
What comes next: We developed an efficient project idea. Next, if we receive positive feedback we will expand the idea and make it ready for implementation in our country - Lithuania.
