BASF Recycling Ecosystem™

Team name / Company name: CYRKL TEAM 1
Team leader: Cyril Klepek
Challenge: no. 6: Closing the loop (only for CZ & SK teams)
Problem: Recycling is tough. We live in a very linear word in which we mainly take -) make -) and waste. Talking about recycling hazardous waste is even tougher! Based on our data we recycled just 44% of hazardous packaging and the rest we burn without energy usage or even worse – we landfill. How to change it? To make it fly the hack has to be truly doable in real world, legal context must be considered, there must be an agreed closed loop with partners and tech to lower transaction cost.
Solution: BASF Recycling Ecosystem™ is an ecosystem that we developed over a day and night and proved to be feasible via robust legislation check and with of empathy and final results testing. The whole solution enables us to closed to solution via having most of the packaging as a reusable package and implementing take back scheme through distributors. Moreover, the waste mobile app solution significantly decreases the cost for the whole system and enable us to track all the materials.
Impact: The environmental impact of our solution is evaluated by calculating CO2 savings. These could be over 100 tons in the case of a scenario where 70% of the total plastic packaging is reused and the rest chemically recycled. If other packaging materials were reused as well, the CO2 savings would be even greater. Our calculations are based on data from CHC and study of Eriksonn and Finnveden (2009). Feasibility: The whole ecosystem is proved to be feasible and in accordance to the law. The whole system beside great environmental impact also bring revenues about 1,28 million EUR. The final distribution will depend on material handling. Besides recycling BASF will also save significant money in lower payments to the EKO-KOM. Prices are based on prices for packages in recycling and reuse. We talked to couple of recycling companies that are willing to buy packaging materials tomorrow.
What you built: The whole system, very robust legislation context for approval, testing with various target groups, mobile app connection to the system.
What you had before: A lot of know-how and the biggest waste trading platform in Europe.
What comes next: Sustainable hacking for us is not just a weekend hobby. More of a long-term mission. We are proud of our solution would love to continue and bring the system into an action together with BASF and the whole system operators.
